 जीवत्सु तातपादेषु नूतने दारसङ्ग्रहे /   मातृभिश्चिन्त्यमानां तॆ हि नॊ दिवसा गताः // //

इयमपि तदा जानकी

प्रतनुविरलैः प्रन्तोन्मीलन्मनोहरकुन्तलैर्दशनमुकुलैर्मुग्धालोकं शिशुर्दधती मुखम् /
ललितललितैर्ज्योत्स्नाप्रायैरकृत्रिमविभ्रमैरकृतममधुरैरम्बानां मे कुतूहलमङ्गकैः //२०//

RAMA – (With tears in his eyes) I remember, O I do.  Our father was alive, we were newly wed, our mothers shielded us from all cares.  Those days are gone forever.  And Janaki - as my mother watched keenly, she would move about like a moon-ray, graceful and beautiful.  Her hair parted by a thin line in the centre, her teeth like flower buds and her face so childlike – naturally appealing, not resorting to artificial things.

लक्ष्मणः एषा मन्थरा /

LAKSHMANA: Here is Manthara!
rAmaha: [anuththaram anyathO gathvA] dEvi vaidhEhi
ingudhIpAdhapaha sOyam shrngavErapurE purA / niSHAdhapathinA yathra snigDHEnAsIth samAgamaha //21//

रामः – (अनुत्तरम् अन्यतो गत्वा) 

 इङ्गुदीपादपः सोऽयं शृङ्गवेरपुरे पुरा / निषादपतिना यत्र स्निग्धेनासीत् समागमः// २१ //

RAMA: [Moves away to another picture without answering ] Vaidehi!
This is that ingudi tree [a scraggy, oil-yielding shrub found in dry parts of India] which was in that place, Shringaverapura, where we met our friend, the head of the Nishada tribe.

lakSHmaNaha; [vihasya svagatham] ayE maDHyamAmbAvrththAntham antharitham AryENa / 

लक्ष्मणः – (विहस्य स्वगतम्) अये / मध्यमाम्बावृत्तान्तम् अन्तरितम् आर्येण /

LAKSHMANA: [Laughs and tells himself] Hey, my brother has avoided the episode involving our step-mother [Kaikeyi]

sIthA – ammO /  ESHa jatAsamyamanavrththAnthaha / 

 सीताअम्मो / एष जटासंयमनवृत्तान्तः /

SITA – Ah!  This depicts us tying up our hair [before leaving on our exile]
puthrasankrAnthalakSHmIkairyadhvrdhDHaikSHvAkubhirDHrtham /  DHrtham bAlyE thadhAryENa puNyam AraNyakam vratham // 22 //

लक्ष्मणः पुत्रसंक्रान्तलक्ष्मीकैर्यद्वृद्धैक्ष्वाकुभिर्धृतम् / धृतं बाल्ये तदर्येण् पुण्यमारण्यकं व्रतम् // २२ //

LAKSHMANA: In the past, only the old kings of the Ikshvaku family underwent the ritual of tying up their hair in this fashion before leaving for the forest after handing over their wealth to their children.  But my brother went through this ritual when he was still young.  Indeed, the observance itself has acquired a virtue because of this.

sIthA – ESHA prasannapuNyasalilA bhagavathI bhAgIraTHI /

सीता एषा प्रसन्नपुण्यसलिला भगवती भागीरथी /

  SITA – Here is the river-Goddess Bhagirathi, with her tranquil and pure waters.

rAmaha – dhEvi raghukuladEvathE / namasthe /
thuragavichayavyagrAnurvibhidhaha sagarADHvarE kapilamahasAmarSHAth pluSHtAn pithushcha pithAmahAn / agaNithathanUthApam thapthvA thapAmsi bhagIraTHO bhagavathi thava sprSHtAnadhbhishchirAdhudhadhIDHarath // 23 //
sA thvam amba snuSHAyAm arunDHathIva sIthAyAm shivAnuDHyAnA bhava /

 

रामःदेवि रघुकुलदेवते / नमस्ते/

तुरगविचयव्यग्रानुर्वीभिदः सगराद्वरे कपिलमहसामर्षात् प्लुष्टान् पितुश्च पितामहान् / अगणिततनूतापं तप्त्वा तपांसि भगीरथो भगवति तव स्पृष्टानद्भिश्चिरादुददीधरत् // २३ //

सा त्वमम्ब स्नुषायाम् अरुन्धतीव सीतायां शिवानुध्याना भव /


RAMA: O Goddess of our family [Raghukula], I bow down to you.  My father’s grandfathers who broke open the earth when searching for the sacred horse during Sagara’s great sacrifice, were burnt by Sage Kapila’s great anger. [Note: Sagara had 60,000 sons.  They were in charge of guarding the horse.  The horse went missing and the sons wrongly accused the sage of having stolen it.  The sage, angered by their indiscretion, instantly reduced them to ashes]  Bhagiratha [a descendant of Sagara], undertook great penance to bring you down here.  At your touch, my ancestors were redeemed instanteneously.
O Mother! Take care of Sita just as Arundhati takes care of her daughter-in-law and bless her with all good things.


lakshmaNaha – ayamasau bharadvAjAvEdhithachithrakUtayAyinI varthmani vanaspathihi kAlindhIthatavataha shyAmO nAma

 

लक्ष्मणःअयमसौ भरद्वाजावेदितचित्रकूटयायिनी वर्त्मनि वनस्पतिः कालिन्दीतटवटः श्यामो नाम /

सीता स्मरत्येतं प्रदेशम् आर्यपुत्रः /

 

rAmaha – ayi kaTHam vismaryathE

alasalulithamugDHAnyaDHvasanjAthakhEdhAdh ashiTHilaparirambhairdhaththasamvAhanAni /  parimrdhithamrNAlI dhurbalAnyangakAni thvamurasi mama krthvA yathra nidhrAmavApthA // 24 //

 

रामः अयि / कथं विस्मर्यते /

अलसलुलितमुग्धान्यध्वसञ्जातखेदाद् अशिथिलपरिरम्भैर्दत्तसंवाहनानि / परिमृदितमृणाली दुर्बलान्यङ्ग्कानि त्वमुरसि मम कृत्वा यत्र निद्रामवाप्ता // २४ //

LAKSHMANA – This shows the battle with Viradha at the fringe of the Vindhya forest.

सीताअलं तावदेतेन / पश्यामि तावद् आर्यपुत्रहस्तधृततालवृन्तातपत्रम् आत्मनो दक्षिणारण्यपथिकत्वम् /

SITA – Enough of this.  Let’s move on to the picture showing my husband on the path to Dakshinaranya forest, holding the palmyra tree leaf by its stalk and using it as an umbrella.

एतानि तानि गिरिनिर्झरिणीतटेषु वैखानसाश्रिततरूणि तपोवनानि / एष्वातिथेयपरमाः शमिनो भजन्ते नीवारमुष्टिपचना गृहिणो गृहाणि //२५//

RAMA – These are the trees in the hermitages on the banks of the mountain streams.  The sages here are excellent hosts though they themselves eat only a fistful of cooked wild rice every day.
