KAVYANUBHAVAM

LAKSHMANA – This is the mountain Prasravana, which is in the midst of the Janasthana forest.  Its slopes are thickly covered with a multitude of trees, so closely packed that there is hardly any space in-between.  The dense canopy envelops the forest in darkness.  The Godavari flows past the mountain and echoes in the mountain caves.  Its peak is perpetually surrounded by clouds and makes it look blue.

RAMA – Milady, do you remember those days on that mountain that we spent with Lakshmana?  Do you remember the beautiful banks of Godavari?  And, do you remember the time we both spent there in each other’s company?

And,

We cherished our togetherness, talked about all kinds of things, in whispers, our cheeks touching each other.  There was no purpose or direction to our conversation.  With our arms about each other, time just flew and so our nights passed.

LAKSHMANA After this, the crafty demons, using the form of the golden deer, put us through such a trial that the memories still haunt us despite our efforts to forget those incidents.  The calamity that befell my brother in that desolate forest, Janasthana, would make a rock cry.  It would break a heart of diamond.

Brother, what is this!

Like pearls from a broken necklace, the tears from your eyes are splattering on the ground.  Though you’re trying to hold back your sadness, the quivering of your nose and lips reveals the heaviness in your heart.

RAMA – My boy, at that time, though the sadness due to separation from my dear one was acute, I bore it because I was bent upon avenging the impropriety.  But it is torturous now, as the fire of sadness in my heart is unbearable and all-consuming.
